Frequently asked questions
Tax-Aide volunteers come from all walks of life. Current volunteer preparers include a beautician, teachers and sales people. Basic computer skills and an interest in helping people are all that is required.
Is training provided?
Yes. We have an excellent training program which encompasses U.S., Ohio and local tax law along with instruction in how to use TaxSlayer tax-preparation software. Training is provided at numerous locations in Ohio, generally in December or January. Volunteers who pass the course are certified to do taxes by the Internal Revenue Service
What is TaxSlayer tax preparation software?
TaxSlayer is professional grade software, much like TaxCut, TaxAct or TurboTax. Tax preparers take data from tax documents, such as W2 wage statements, and input it into the program. TaxSlayer does all the calculations and has an error-detection component.
What if I make a mistake?
Everyone does, from transposing numbers to overlooking a form. That’s why all tax returns are thoroughly reviewed by a second volunteer in the presence of the taxpayer.
The Tax-Aide error rate is less than a fraction of a percent. Additionally each new volunteer is assigned to a mentor who is available throughout training, certification and the tax season.
How much time is required?
One day a week during tax season. Tax-Aide sites are open during business hours one to three days a week from Feb.1 to April 15. Almost all new volunteers work one day per week whereas almost half of our experienced volunteers will work two, a few three, days per week. You never work alone. Most sites have at least four tax preparers and some have as many as eight.
Is mileage reimbursed?
Yes. There is a mileage reimbursement program for both training and tax preparation provided that the volunteer works a total of 40 hours during the tax season.
Must I be a member of AARP?
No. While many tax preparers are members of AARP, many are not. AARP membership is no part of the Tax-Aide program.
